When VSI-thinking first started, it was just myself as a freelance developer. As soon as we had developed into a sustainable business, I was able to do something I believe all businesses should do - work closely with a charity.
Hijinx Theatre were the ideal cause - working with adults with learning disabilities was an aspiration I understood. Close friends of my family had a child with downs, but he was always part of everything the family did. Whenever the family visited, Huw and I would always be at the computer or doing something. It is about inclusion, equality, and in my opinion, simply normality.
All businesses should directly support and be involved with a charlity, as it broadens the experience and allows you to offer your commercial skills. It sometimes seems lazy or uninvolved to simply donate to an umbrella organisation, or through a third party without actually meeting, understanding or helping the beneficiar directly. Giving a cheque to a charity may tick a box for corporate responsibility, but there is no substitute for the reward and appreciation gained from offering your time and attention to a worthy cause.
We will always support one of the most worthy, Hijinx Theatre.
