The mobile web is taking off with products like the iPhone making the Internet more accessible than ever. To make sure your customers can access your web site on their mobile phones our web sites can be optimised for the latest phones.
Two of the most popular devices currently on the market are the Apple iPod touch and iPhone. The only difference between these two devices is that one has phone capabilities, whilst the other is predominantly a music and video device, which is also optimised to take on the internet. The mobile internet has progressed rapidly along with other mobile technology, having improved since the black and white days of WAP (wireless application protocol), and is now using technologies such as UMTS and HSDPA to give full colour pages at broadband speeds. Below we have pictures of the Bristol Serviced Lettings website being shown on an iPhone.
The reason we have been able to accomplish this feat is through making our web sites, supported with our content management system, standards compliant. Standards compliant websites can be validated against the W3C, an organisation which lays down strict rules as to how to formulate web pages using HTML, DHTML, XHTML and CSS. They also lay down strict rules for browsers so that they can conform to accessibility standards.
Having a site which is validated against these rules is crucial as it gives your site a multitude of benefits. Cross browser compatibility is one major benefit, meaning that your site will look the same on Internet Explorer on a PC, on Firefox in Linux, and on Safari on Mac. This is important as your website is often the first point of contact your business will have with a potential customer. Your website will be accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities, meaning that people with poor vision can use your website. The most important benefit however, is to your search engine rankings, as it is easier for the search engine to understand how you're site works and to scna and index the content.
