Have you ever wondered how a website is displayed in your web browser? The internet is massive network, just like the network that you have in your office or home, which spans a great number of computers. These computers are often held in data centres, warehouses where the computers are held together.
When you open up a website, a request is sent from your computer to one of these computers. This request is then processed by the computer, and the response is sent back to your computer, in a digital conversation. There are many different types of requests, from web pages, to retrieving files, to retrieve small amounts of data. These server computers are left on all the time to ensure that the services are constantly available for usage.
With the web being used for more and more, these servers are becoming more and more powerful. The network is also becoming stronger, supporting ever increasing speeds. The internet is the new medium for delivering information, and being platform independent is it's strong point.
