With our birthday hats, vuvuzelas and party cake at the ready, the staff at VSI prepare to celebrate the Internet’s Birthday. It seems almost yesterday that we were all happy buying things in store; arguing pointless facts with friends to no conclusion; consulting physical dictionaries; posting mail; using the quill; climbing trees. But alas it was only 19 years ago that the first website was created, how quickly the web’s grown since then.
Created by Berners-Lee on August 6th 1991, the first website Info.cern.ch somewhat ironically provided information regarding the WWW project. It taught visitors about how to use hypertext; along with the technical details for creating websites; and even explaining how to search the Web for information. From 1 site to 250 million websites in just 19 years growth and growing at a staggering rate (47 million more sites were created last year) it’s turned into one of the most important creations in history.
This should be a global holiday. I’m being deadly serious.
